Half way through 2018 and the November copper network shutdown is looming. Is your business prepared for what’s to come?
For those unaware, the ACCC has determined that Telstra is required to shut down its copper network in line with NBN Fibre network, regardless of the NBN’s progress. Businesses in the NBN rollout zone will be permanently disconnected from a range of traditional services:
- PSTN Calling i.e. fixed phone services over the copper network
- ADSL and ADSL2+ Broadband
- Cable Broadband
- Any services attached to the PSTN phone line such as EFTPOS
Once the NBN have announced your area is ready for service, you will be required to transition your landline phone and internet services to the NBN or alternatives. With no exceptions to this disconnection, all businesses on legacy copper services in the relevant NBN rollout areas have no choice but to migrate to an alternative technology. Therefore, the only way for landline and fixed internet services to remain connected is to make the switch before November 2018.
The NBN is a wholesale provider only, giving businesses the option to source out their own phone and internet providers. With the decommissioning of the copper telecommunications network and over 3.8 million premises connected to the NBN, businesses are encouraged to act promptly. Businesses are urged to seek alternative solutions either through the NBN or your preferred service provider.
