Are you using ISDN or PSTN legacy phone systems? It may be time to consider switching to an efficient and cost-effective cloud or Internet Protocol (IP) based phone system before it’s too late.
What do these acronyms stand for?
Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and Integrated Services for Digital Network (ISDN) are some of the oldest and most commonly used telephone lines amongst Australian businesses.
PSTN is a dedicated landline phone service delivered to your premise via copper lines. With a dedicated service, each line has a unique phone number with the area code of its assigned telephone exchange, suitable for users that only have the need to use one line for one conversation at a time. This is a service that is predominantly suited for smaller businesses.
ISDN is a digital network technology that carries and transmits voice, data, video and fax in a digital format, giving you the option to have multiple lines. This is a service that is traditionally used by medium to large businesses.
PSTN & ISDN to be phased out
In line with the NBN rollout, traditional PSTN and ISDN services will be phased out. Once the NBN have announced your area is ready for service, you will be required to transition your landline phone services. With no exceptions to this disconnection, all businesses on legacy phone services in the relevant NBN rollout areas have no choice but to migrate to an alternative technology. With over 3.8 million premises now connected to the NBN, businesses are urged to seek alternative solutions through your preferred service provider.
Why make the switch?
It’s obvious that businesses will have no choice but to update their phone systems due to the copper network disconnection. However, IP and cloud based phone services provide many benefits that are encouraging Australian businesses to make the switch. The new generation of IP and cloud based phone systems allow for more flexible, sophisticated and cost-effective solutions that will continue to evolve long after the copper network is disconnected.
Switching to a cloud or IP based phone system ultimately provides employees with increased mobility and flexibility. Traditionally, PSTN and ISDN services restrict employees to desk phones. Through IP and cloud, calls can be answered through various connected devices, accommodating out of office working trends.
Avoid being without a service. With disconnection dates approaching, you should be planning to migrate away from your legacy services today. Commence your migration before your areas scheduled disconnection date to avoid any resourcing constraints. Not sure if and when your business will be disconnected? That is a conversion we urge you to have with your current service provider to migrate to the best possible solution.
